DeLauro Statement on Trump Administration Single-Handedly Preventing Migrant Families Separated at the Border from Receiving Mental Health Services

Statement

Date: Nov. 19, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), Chair of the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, issued this statement on reports that Trump White House adviser Stephen Miller killed a DOJ-supported deal to pay for mental health care for migrant families separated at the border:

"The Trump administration's, specifically Stephen Miller's, hate and cruelty knows no bounds. Stephen Miller's refusal to accept a deal that included mental health services for children and families ultimately resulted in a judge ordering the government to pay $14 million, $6 million more than the original deal.

"From family separation to the inadequate living conditions, refusal to vaccinate children, and widespread abuse, the extent of the shameful, abhorrent government-sponsored child abuse committed by this administration is beyond the pale. Taxpayer dollars should never have been used to carry out these policies. Administration officials responsible for this must be held accountable."
